HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

Proclamation

September 15, 2013

WHEREAS, On September 17, 1968, Public Law 90-498 authorized the President of the United States to annually establish a week in September as National Hispanic Heritage Week; and

WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month was enacted by Public Law 102-450 on August 17, 1988; and

WHEREAS, the theme for Hispanic Heritage Month 2013 is “Hispanics: Serving and Leading Our Nation with Pride and Honor;” and

WHEREAS, we recognize the positive impact that our Hispanic communities have on the social, cultural and economic development of North Carolina and the United States; and

WHEREAS, Hispanic-Americans continue to excel in many areas, such as public service, business, education and government; this perseverance has allowed for continued success and accomplishments through education and hard work, therefore enriching our communities; and

WHEREAS, Hispanics’ rich history makes up the Hispanic/Latino ethnic and cultural groups: Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican and Central and South American; and

WHEREAS, September 15th was chosen due to the anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua; additionally, Mexico declared its independence September 16th and Chile September 18th; and

WHEREAS, Hispanic Heritage Month is a time of celebration and appreciation of our rich culture, tradition and numerous contributions made in our communities.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, PAT McCRORY, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim September 15 through October 15, 2013, as “HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Great Seal of the State of North Carolina at the Capitol in Raleigh this twenty-seventh day of August in the year of our Lord two thousand and thirteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-eighth.
