WHEREAS, April 2013 marks the 45th Anniversary of the Federal Fair Housing Act of 1968 and the 30th Anniversary of the State Fair Housing Act of 1983; and

WHEREAS, the State Fair Housing Act of 1983 and the Federal Fair Housing Act of 1968 prohibit discrimination in housing due to race, color, religion, sex, nationality, handicap or familial status; and

WHEREAS, all North Carolinians have the right to live in the community of their choice without fear and on the same terms as their neighbors; and

WHEREAS, the North Carolina Human Relations Commission through coordinated efforts  with the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, county and local governments, fair housing organizations, concerned citizens and the housing industry, promotes broader housing choices in North Carolina, understanding of the State Fair Housing Act and the Federal Fair Housing Act to encourage integrated communities and/or neighborhoods, ensure accessible housing for the disabled, securing compliance with state and federal fair housing laws, eliminating discrimination in housing, punishing those who violate the State’s fair housing law, and protecting the victims of housing discrimination;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, PAT McCRORY, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim April 2013, as “FAIR HOUSING MONTH” in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.
