Gov. Perdue, Cherokee Sign Amended Compact

RALEIGH - RALEIGH – Gov. Bev Perdue and leaders of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians today signed an amended agreement expected to create 400 new jobs in western North Carolina by expanding the Cherokee’s gaming enterprises. The 30-year compact will allow the Cherokee to offer live table gaming, and it will provide for the state to receive a share of revenue generated from these new games. The state’s share of the revenue from this agreement is directed to classroom education.

Keycard Manufacturer to Create 42 Jobs in Buncombe County

RALEIGH - Gov. Bev Perdue today announced that Plasticard Locktech International, a specialty printer of plastic and paper products, will expand its facility in Buncombe County. The company plans to create 42 jobs and invest $4.4 million over the next three years in Asheville. The project was made possible in part by a $84,000 grant from the One North Carolina Fund.

Bev Perdue is proclaiming Wednesday, May 16, 2012, as Tourism Day in North Carolina, celebrating travel and tourism as a major industry that is vital to the economic stability and growth of the state. For the first time, state tax receipts as a result of visitor spending topped $1 billion in 2011 and have increased more than 50 percent in the last 10 years.

RALEIGH - Gov. Bev Perdue announced today that exports in 2011 surged to a record high with increased global demand supporting job growth in the state. North Carolina’s merchandise exports grew 8% (or $2.1 billion) to $27 billion, surpassing the peak of $25 billion in 2008.

Gov. Perdue to Invest in Film Industry Workforce Development Initiative in Budget

RALEIGH - This afternoon at EUE Screen Gem Studios, Gov. Bev Perdue will announce that her 2012-2013 budget proposal will include $1 million to launch a community college based workforce development initiative to continue fostering the skills and talents needed for the growing film sector in North Carolina. The funding will go to community colleges in Wilmington and Winston-Salem to develop and offer 10 new workforce training courses. The five-week program will train as many as 400 people for the private sector jobs that our growing film industry needs.
