Think you have what it takes to balance North Carolina's budget?
Gov. Perdue plans to unveil her budget proposal this week.
Before her proposal goes live, you have a chance to write your own. Today, Gov. Perdue launched her "Balance the Budget Challenge," an interactive feature designed to give anyone the chance to weigh the options and make tough decisions to close North Carolina's budget deficit.
As much as possible, the choices in the interactive tool are based on real-world data. Many of the options you will find within the app were on the table when Gov. Perdue created her budget.
The challenge features nearly 100 different choices that affect North Carolina’s $2.4 billion deficit. In addition to spending cuts, players will have the option to invest in key North Carolina priorities.
Players will quickly discover three real-world facts about North Carolina’s budget:
- The current budget deficit is deep and filling it will require difficult decisions that affect real people and jobs in North Carolina.
- The majority of the state’s spending is in Education and Social Services. These areas cannot be entirely spared from cuts.
- Every choice has consequences. A job, a family or a business will be affected by cuts.
