More and more of us depend on “smartphones” to help navigate through our daily lives.  Whether it’s finding the nearest local services in a pinch, getting e-mail alerts about school and day care schedules, or keeping up with our favorite team, devices like iPhones, Androids and Blackberrys are important tools for keeping in touch.

In emergencies such as a hurricane or a snow storm they can keep us connected to important information. When the power goes out, or access to the Internet via computer is lost, our smartphones might be the only link to official information and news.

That’s why the N.C. Department of Transportation created NCDOT Mobile – the phone-friendly version of our key web-based services. NCDOT Mobile brings traffic alerts and maps into the palm of anyone who uses a smartphone, in an easier to use, easy to read and navigate format.

NCDOT Mobile makes it easier for you to “know before you go.”  The idea is not to use the service while you’re driving, but before you get behind the wheel.

NCDOT Mobile is web-based so it will work on the widest variety of smartphone models possible, including iPhone, Google Android, Blackberry (newer models) and iPad.  To use it, type “m.ncdot.gov” into the browser on your smartphone. Then, bookmark it and save it to your phone’s home screen for future reference.  Be sure your phones Location Services or GPS function is on.

Key features of NCDOT Mobile include:

• Real-time traffic information that works with your phone’s built-in mapping, GPS and wireless location services.
• Searchable DMV office locations that also work with your phone’s mapping capabilities.
• Searchable Rest Area locations.
• Ferry and Amtrak schedules and information.
• NCDOT Twitter messages.
• NCDOT News.
• Contact NCDOT link.

Read more about NCDOT Mobile, watch a video on the new service, and connect to it directly with your smartphone’s bar code scanner at www.ncdot.gov.

NCDOT Mobile will be a very useful tool for anyone who has a smartphone and commutes every day, takes a trip across the state, or who needs quick, easy access to NCDMV’s most demanded services.  Let us know what you think!
