State employees are concerned about saving the state money and NCThinks helps them do just that!

NCThinks is designed to promote efficiency and economy in state government and to save tax dollars by recognizing and rewarding individual state employees for suggestions that improve state government operations.

The State Review Committee of NCThinks recently approved an award for a suggestion submitted by four employees of the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Division Four.  The four employees -- Debbie Leonard, Ronnie Ketter, Bobby Lewis and Eric Boyette -- submitted a suggestion asking state troopers to place a yellow tag on guardrails damaged by motor vehicle accidents. Each tag identifies the date and time of crash, make and model of the vehicle, etc. This process has facilitated more speedy repairs, allowed for more accurate identification of the responsible parties involved in creating the damage and also allowed for more timely reimbursements. Prior to this suggestion being implemented, the state lost an estimated $6 million due to damage to guardrails from car accidents (because of drivers leaving the scene without reporting the damage or not having the proper insurance.)

The suggestion was implemented in all 100 counties. Savings from the suggestion totaled $224,567.47.  NCThinks has saved $11.6 million for North Carolina since 1975.
