Several Department of Administration employees have answered Governor Perdue’s call this week to support National Volunteer Week. I was pleased to have an opportunity myself this week to deliver non-perishable food items collected by my fraternity, Sigma Pi Phi, to the Inter-Faith Council for Social Services Food Bank in Carrboro.
Chief Operating Officer Anne Bander did her Meals on Wheels route on Tuesday, a service she has enjoyed providing for more than 20 years as a member of Hadassah and Temple Beth Or.
Jill Hammergren, Media Services Manager at the Agency for Public Telecommunications, will be working with Resurrection Lutheran Church in Cary this week for Operation Inasmuch. She will be among 150-plus volunteers who will be repairing homes and doing yard work, making and serving meals, and performing other tasks for various charities, organizations and individuals across the Triangle.
Bob Zenkel, Director of Management Information Systems, is preparing to assist at the annual WakeMed Apex Peak Fest, which will celebrate the “Peak of Good Living” on May 1. This festival has grown from a small community day in a school parking lot to an event which draws hundreds of vendors and over 25,000 people of the streets of downtown Apex.
These are just a few of the many selfless acts our employees routinely perform, week in and week out, to benefit their communities. They demonstrate the true spirit of volunteerism by doing good works for people, many of who may never know their names, but whose lives will be forever improved by their generosity.
