As winter approaches, it is important for all families, businesses and schools to plan and prepare now to be safe and warm this winter. That’s why Gov. Perdue declared Nov. 29 through Dec. 5 as Winter Weather Preparedness Week.

It doesn’t take much frozen precipitation to cause havoc on our roadways, disrupt power and knock down tree limbs.  An ice storm in 2002 left more than 1.3 million homes and businesses without power, while the 2005 ice storm prompted massive gridlock in the Triangle region.

While we’ve been spared such harsh winter storms in recent years, meteorologists are predicting a wet winter with below-normal temperatures. Taking a few simple steps now to prepare can help ensure that your family is safe when storms hit.

1 – Assemble an emergency kit with non-perishable food, water, medical supplies, tools, clothing and important documents.
2 - Have plans for what to do and where to go if you need to evacuate. Be sure to include your pets in your plans.
3 – Listen to your local news for weather forecasts and updates.
4 – Practice your plans to be sure they work.

Preparing for a winter storm is not hard. But recovering from one can be if you are not prepared.
