This weekend North Carolina consumers can help their wallets, the state’s economy and the environment – all at the same time.  Today through Sunday is our state’s 2nd annual Energy Star Tax-Free weekend.  During the weekend there will be no sales tax charged on selected home appliances such as clothes washers, freezers, refrigerators and other items that carry the “Energy Star” label.

North Carolina residents can save money not simply on the purchase of an appliance, but also on their utility bill since “Energy Star” appliances use less energy and cut household utility bills.  In addition, purchasing appliances keeps our state’s retail economy going as well as support the people and companies that manufacture the items.  Also, by using more energy-efficient appliances, it cuts down on the demand for electricity which reduces the need to burn more fossil fuels to produce electricity.

Merchants, from multi-store chains to independent shops, welcome this once-a-year opportunity, said Fran Preston, president of the N.C. Retail Merchants Association.  “Retailers are planning special sales to coincide with the three-day holiday.  So, not only will shoppers save on the ‘Energy Star’ products they come into buy, but will also have a variety of special retail pricing as they shop.”

Pat Carstensen, chair of the N.C. Sierra Club’s executive committee, said it helps consumers reduce energy use and save money.  “’Energy Star’ appliances are a great way for consumers to do good for the environment while doing good for their pocket book,” Carstensen said.  “Energy efficiency is one of the best ways to make our country energy independent.”

Dan Crawford, director of governmental relations of the Conservation Council of North Carolina, said the ‘Energy Star’ tax holiday is one way to make smarter choices for the environment.  “We shouldn’t have to choose between a strong economy and a clean environment, they can go hand in hand,” he said.

Eligible “Energy Star” items include: clothes washers, freezers, refrigerators, central air conditioners, room air conditioners, air-source heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps, ceiling fans, dehumidifiers and programmable thermostats.  They must carry the “Energy Star” label, meaning they meet the energy efficient standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.
