Last week, a gathering of elected officials, educators, activists, civic groups, church dignitaries and a judge came together to raise funds and awareness for the Columbus County D.R.E.A.M. (Developing Resilience through Enrichment Awareness & Motivation) Center.  I had the pleasure of attending and giving remarks on behalf of Governor Perdue to the packed civic room at the Whiteville City Schools Administration building.

The D.R.E.A.M. Center has been serving Columbus County for many years, effectively assisting thousands of people in the community in areas of health, nutrition, education, housing, technology, youth and community development.  The goal of the first annual “Launch of Dreams” luncheon was to raise awareness but most importantly funds, which are critical to saving lives through their HIV and drug awareness program, faith-based programs, supporting their housing, and after school programs.

The guest speaker was the newest district court judge, the Honorable Sherry Dew Tyler (pictured).  Judge Tyler’s experience as a former school teacher and with families in the judicial system has given her a unique perspective on the challenges Columbus County communities face.

The “Launch of Dreams” luncheon was a huge success and the center will continue to provide services for Columbus County for years to come. To learn more about the D.R.E.A.M. Center please contact Carol Caldwell or Evelyn Troy at 910-642-0633.

I hope to see you all at the 2nd Annual “Launch of Dreams” Luncheon!
