Sunday, September 20, 2009 is a day for the history books in Kinston, NC! On this clear and warm afternoon a couple of thousand people turned out to Grainger Stadium to celebrate Kinston being named an All-America City. Governor Perdue was on-hand to present the award to Mayor Buddy Ritch and to enjoy an afternoon of fireworks and music.

Since 1949, over 4,000 communities have competed to become an All-America City and Kinston was among 30 finalists this year. Kinston won the All-America City award from the National Civic League in 1988 too!

The National Civic League chooses 10 U.S. cities annually with a strong record of residents and officials collaborating to overcome challenges. Kinston has many challenges, but as their motto states: We’re On The Way; honors like this prove that everyone in this community is working hard through tough times to create a better community.

Governor Perdue during her remarks summed it up nicely to the local dignitaries on stage and to the citizens in the stands;

“We are mighty proud!”

Congratulations to Kinston and everyone who worked so tirelessly to bring this honor to the city.
