There are always many great happenings in Eastern NC, plenty of festivals, parades and fireworks, but no week is celebrated more in the East than the upcoming July 4th Holiday. Our country’s independence will be enthusiastically celebrated with our friends and family over grilled hot dogs and under the fireworks that will light up our state’s coastal communities.

While the celebration of the Fourth looks to honor the countries past accomplishments, another celebration taking place this month in Eastern NC honors the present and future home of one our state’s distinguished military bases. The Commander-In-Chief’s Award for Installation Excellence is the honor presented annually to the top Base in each of the Armed Services for outstanding achievement in installation management. A Base is chosen based on its overall demonstrated commitment to brilliance and leadership in installation management, environmental stewardship, public safety, energy management, family support and superb quality of life programs for our soldiers. In civilian terms this means the best of the best in all of America!

The Fiscal Year’s 2008 Commander-In-Chief’s Award was bestowed upon Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune located in Onslow County. The award presentation will be on July 22nd at the Pentagon in our nation’s capitol.

So as you celebrate with your friends and family this weekend, take a minute to remember those who have fought for our freedom, those currently in other countries continuing to serve as well as our dedicated service men and women right here in the Old North State working hard everyday to ensure that we will continue to celebrate our Independence Day.
