THE NC COMMISSION ON VOLUNTEERISM AND COMMUNITY SERVICE

The commission promotes and facilitates community service and volunteer initiatives across the state and administers the AmeriCorps State grants and Learn and Serve America community-based programs. The commission is driven by a document known as the Unified State Plan, which is a three-year plan that will link community service and volunteer programs to a shared vision to which the partners are jointly committed. The plan includes input from 16 public forums held throughout the state. The mission statement of the commission is, "To enhance the quality of life for North Carolinians, through volunteer and community service and to ensure long term prosperity by promoting the capabilities of people, communities, and enterprises utilizing community service and volunteerism as an integral part of the growth of North Carolina."

AmeriCorps is a national network of community-based programs in which Americans age 17 and older participate in results-driven service. In exchange for a year or two of service, AmeriCorps members earn education awards to finance college, graduate school, or vocational training or to help pay back student loans. Members learn new skills, take on challenging responsibilities, and join a network of people committed to service.

All AmeriCorps programs have a common mission—getting things done to help communities address challenges in the areas of education, public safety, human needs and the environment; strengthening communities by bringing people together from all backgrounds to solve problems at the local level; encouraging responsibility through service and civic education; and expanding opportunities by helping to make education more affordable.

LEARN AND SERVE AMERICA IN NORTH CAROLINA LogoLEARN AND SERVE AMERICA IN NORTH CAROLINA

Learn and Serve America provides service learning curricula to schools to involve students in service to communities as part of their academic experience. Through community-based programs for elementary and high school students, Learn and Serve America is building an ethic of service among youth. Learn and Serve America programs enable participants to address urgent community needs while integrating service with academic curricula and other learning opportunities. They help students put their studies into context, improve their academic achievement, and develop a strong sense of civic responsibility.
